Gemstones (also referred to as crystals or semi precious stones) are made from natural minerals formed within the earth’s surface and are identified by their array of colours and mineral composition. There is much more to them than just being pretty coloured rocks and understanding their history and use is key to appreciating their true beauty.
Gemstones have been used around the world for thousands of years and not just in jewellery. The Sumerians used crystals to make magical formulas and Ancient Egyptians placed quartz gemstones in tombs to allow safe passage into the afterlife. The Greeks rubbed crushed hematite over warrior’s bodies before battle to give protection and invincibility. And of course psychics and fortune tellers favour crystal balls and scrying glasses to see into the future.
There are also theories that gemstones can benefit our health and wellbeing. It is thought that they work through the bodies Chakras (energy centres) to bring balance and speed up healing. A huge range of alternative therapies also work through the Chakra system, from acupuncture to reki.
Science has failed to prove the effects of gemstones on diseases or conditions, but it has shown they do vibrate and exhibit piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects (they can hold heat and electricity). Many crystal healers agree that they work in ways which is beyond our understanding. Research into dark matter and quantum physics will in the future may help our understanding of how exactly how crystals work.
Whether you agree that they hold power or not, they are nevertheless fascinating and wearing a gemstone with a clear intention is a strong psychological tool that connects us with the past and the earth’s beauty.
